NORTH AMERICAN BACKBONE
STATUS OF ECHOLIST CONFERENCE CHANGES
BACKSTAT.NA
05 May 1996
BACKSTAT.NA is a weekly information file prepared for the Overseer of
Backbone Operations (1:1/200). It is distributed in the BACKBONE file
echo, posted in the Z1_BACKBONE echo, and it summarizes BACKBONE.NA and
BACKBONE.NO additions, deletions and requests, as well as Zone echomail
contacts.
The daily status of echo addition requests may be obtained automatically
by sending either a
1. file request to 1:153/751 with the Magic Name of STATUS, or
2. netmail to 'Backbone' at 1:153/752 with subject of 'Status'.
Help with using the Backstat request software may be obtained in the
same ways, using 'Help' instead of 'Status'.
BACKBONE.NA is the primary Backbone echolist.
BACKBONE.NO is a list of Backbone echoes no longer in the Elist,
or with low traffic.
Elist is the International Echolist produced by 1:1/201.
Z1_BACKBONE is an echo for discussion of the Zone 1 Mail Backbone.

7. STEPS TO ADD A NEW ECHO TO BACKBONE.NA
===========================================================================
1. Moderator sends Netmail or Internet email to the Echolist as
shown in the current month's version of ELMODnnn.ZIP, available
from the Echolist Coordinator at 1:1/201 (magic name ELMOD) or
http://www.portal.ca/~awalker/elist.htm, to get the echo
information on the ELIST.
2. Moderator posts a message using one of these choices:
LOCATION ADDRESSED TO SUBJECT
a. Z1_BACKBONE echo Backbone -
b. Netmail Backbone at 1:153/752 -
c. Internet email awalker@portal.ca Backbone
requesting addition of the echo to BACKBONE.NA. Included in this
request must be an UNQUOTED, UNALTERED copy of the netmail or
Internet email ELIST reply message.
Please do not use the original Elist application, the Elist file
extract, or the posting in the ECHOLIST echo, since none of these
contain the formatted lines which the Robot reads automatically,
and delays in recording the request may result. Requests missing
the above information can not be accepted.
Acknowledgement will be a Fidonet Netmail or Internet email
message (as applicable) from the Backstat software, and the
listing in BACKSTAT.NA.
3. Sysops receiving the echo ask their REC (or NEC if the
Region's procedure prefers it) to recommend that the echo be added
to the Backbone.
4. RECs on receiving sysop request(s) from within their Region
post a message using one of these choices:
LOCATION ADDRESSED TO SUBJECT
a. Z1_BACKBONE echo Backbone -
b. Netmail Backbone at 1:153/752 -
asking that the echo be placed on the backbone. These requests
are recorded in BACKSTAT.NA.
5. When 2 or more REC requests are recorded, the Overseer of
Backbone Operations may add the echo to BACKBONE.NA, thus placing
it onto the North American Backbone. Echoes not attaining backbone
status within one month of their listing will be dropped.
Moderators may request an extension of one additional month.
6. Existing private links are changed to fit the local backbone
echomail distribution topology while avoiding generating dupe
loops.
7. Starting from the date of addition to BACKBONE.NA, to remain
on Backbone distribution an echo must have a traffic level of 5
messages per month and must remain in the Elist.
An echo whose Elist entry expires, or which does not meet the
traffic level required, will be moved from BACKBONE.NA to
BACKBONE.NO for up to 3 months at which time, unless the problem
is corrected, it will be dropped.
8. If an echo on BACKBONE.NO is re-Elisted by the moderator, it
will be returned automatically to the next issue of BACKBONE.NA,
since the Elist software forwards a weekly list of re-Elisted
echoes to the Backbone.
Questions on the above procedure may be addressed to the Overseer of
Backbone Operations in the Z1_BACKBONE echo, or by netmail to 1:1/200.

Each region is normally offered 1 link to each ZHub. Exceptions are
made after agreement between the REC, Z1EC, and the ZHub subject to the
ability to handle the additional load. Individual net/node connections
to ZHubs are made on the basis that the node will serve as a Region Hub,
the exception being connections local to the ZHub.
The addition of requests for new echoes, and the selection of echoes to
be added to BACKBONE.NA, along with preparation of BACKSTAT.NA is
performed by automated software following the requirements listed above.
The software is located at 1:153/752.
